Chicago has historically been at the forefront of legal challenges to legalized racial segregation in housing. Famous cases like Hansberry v. Lee (in the Woodlawn community) helped to destroy the notorious practice of racially restrictive covenants in deeds which prohibited homeowners from selling to African Americans.
